Traditional Western Medicine’s Response To RLS

Before discussing the treatments available by traditional
North American doctors it is important to understand their
motivations.

In our society today, physicians typically treat the
symptoms of a problem and not the root cause of it.
Although society is changing, your physician will usually not
treat your body in a holistic way. If you have chronic
headaches, they chronically prescribe pain medications or
anti-inflammatory’s. Although it is nice to be able to get rid
of your headache quickly wouldn’t you rather get to the root of
the problem? Wouldn’t you like to get rid of your headaches for
good?

So why don’t most physicians take the time to treat their
patients holistically? I believe it is simply efficiency. The
human body is so complex that it can be very time consuming to
get to the root of any given problem.

The more patients that your doctor sees, the money they
make. As there is only so many hours in the day, the more
efficient they are with each patient, the more patients they
see and consequently the more income they take in.

As you can see, efficiency does not necessarily equal
effectiveness. So, our doctors get in the habit of treating the
patients symptoms by writing prescriptions rather than getting
to the underlying issues.

Also, it is a well known fact that pharmaceutical companies
provide compensation to physicians for promoting their
products. I am not speaking necessarily about monetary
compensation (although that does happen) but other types of
incentives such as trips, office furniture, dinners etc.

Now, I want to be careful to point out that I am not saying
that all doctors are crooks, I am sure that the vast majority
are honest hardworking individuals that care about their
patients but there is powerful motivation in some circumstances
to prescribe medication.

What I am saying is that due to time constraints and the way
the pharmaceutical system set up, it is easy to see how a
physician’s first thought when encountering RLS is to prescribe
medication that treats the symptoms and does not treat the
underlying causes.

I am not suggesting that medication does not have a place in
treating RLS, in fact I take medication as part of my overall
coping strategy. I am suggesting that medication is not
necessarily right for everybody and it should only be one part
of your overall fight against Restless Legs Syndrome.

Home Remedies For RLS

Even though misunderstood, RLS has been a major problem for
many sufferers and over time there have been many home remedies
to deal with the problem.

Typically, these will not cure the RLS but will provide some
relief of the symptoms.

One that has worked for me in the past is taking a very hot
bath for 45 minutes or so. Once the symptoms begin, I pour a
bath that is as hot as I can stand it and I will sit in it for
a long time, sometimes up to an hour. Many people believe that
RLS is a circulation issue and I suppose that the hot water
helps your circulation as it shunts the blood to your
extremities. It is inconvenient to go for a bath every night at
2 in the morning or so but it is nice to know that I have a
sure fire relief from the symptoms if I need it.

Others swear that wearing shoes to bed or compression
stockings help the symptoms. These methods have never been
effective for me but again, RLS is such an individual
problem.

An interesting number of people have said that taking apple
cider vinegar before bed (2 teaspoons or so) has a positive
effect on RLS.

Personally, I find that my RLS is greatly exacerbated during
times of stress. I would like to explore something like yoga to
see if relaxation techniques would be successful.

The Types Of Medical Software Available For Download

Medical software comes in a wide variety of forms. For
instance, there is software that provides a single focus such
as peer-reviewed information on drugs. There is software that
provides a diversity of services.

Some are all-purpose software programs that cover such
elements as electronic medical records, prescribing,
documenting, coding, tracking, billing and accounts
receivable.

You can download programs that can be separated into four
main categories: medical software, medical records, medical
billing and practice management. Downloadable medical software
also come in freeware, trialware, and crippleware as well as
fully functional downloads that can be purchased over the
internet.

There is a wide range of medical software that is available
to download. An example is the drug database type of
downloadable programs. I was at the doctor’s office recently
and the doctor pulled out a PalmPilot and began tapping the
screen. I had been used to doctors opening a huge book that
contained information on all available drugs.

PDA medical software is very useful. There is the Medical
Student’s Pocket Reference, there is a variety of software that
can be downloaded for nurses, for medical practices, for
patients, and for any type of specialty medicine you can
imagine.

There is medical software that an individual can download.
Weight control, stress management, and diabetes control are but
a small example of the kind of software programs that people
can download and install on their computers or PDAs.

From the point of view of the medical profession,
downloadable medical software offers the benefit of always
being up to date. A good example is the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fourth Edition. This
is the latest word on mental disorders. In the past, this
manual was issued every few years and diagnostic code updates
were issue annually.

It was cumbersome to keep the updates and the manual
together and current. However, if you download this medical
software, updates are easily obtained online. Think about the
speed and convenience of instant updates and the speed and
convenience of being able to flick open the program on your
laptop or PDA and check the latest information on a drug or a
diagnosis. The truth is that in the case of some illnesses,
even a week saved in accessing the latest information or record
can make a huge difference in the quality of health for the
patient.

Medical software downloads can be informational or they can
be analytical or they can be for recordkeeping. In a field
where so much of the information is cutting edge, fast-moving,
and critical, being able to download medical software means the
difference between having the necessary information at your
fingertips today or a year from now.

Do I Have A Bile Reflux Symptom?

Let’s talk about what bile reflux is and then we will move
into the common bile reflux symptoms.

Bile reflux can happen to anyone at anytime including
babies, small children adults and the elderly. No one is
immune. First, let’s discuss acid reflux.  The typical
acid reflux that you experience is caused from . Perhaps you
ate ‘too good’ (ie. rich foods or spicy foods etc.). This can
lead to a build up of excess acids that simply overflow into
your esophagus and cause pain in the breast bone or heart area
of your chest. This is a normal condition that can happen when
we do not take care of ourselves and have poor eating habits.
People are more aware of acid reflux but they actually are very
similar. The difference with acid reflux and bile reflux is
that instead of (or in addition to) acid traveling back up the
body, bile from the liver travels back up through the body.

This normal type of acid or bile reflux evolves to a disease
when it becomes chronic (reoccurs over and over). The body has
a mechanism for stopping the stomach’s acid from flowing back
up into the esophagus and beyond. It is called the lower
esophageal sphincter. This sphincter can become damaged over
time due to chronic poor eating habits, sleep apnea or many
other reasons including even old age.

So, how do you know if you have an acid or bile reflux
disease symptom? The most poignant symptom is a burning
sensation in the chest. Typically it would occur after you eat
too much or if you eat food that is especially rich or spicy.
Some common trigger foods include coffee, butter, chocolate and
citric fruit. Now, if you over indulge or consume these trigger
foods on an empty stomach you may feel this burning sensation.
It could very well be an episode of acid or bile reflux. But,
unless it is a chronic (ongoing) problem it is probably not
acid or bile reflux disease.

Another common acid or bile reflux disease symptom is
belching or burping excessively. Once again, poor choices in
food can make us all belch but if you find this to be on
ongoing issue, you may have acid or bile reflux disease.

The key here in both situations is if the conditions are
frequent and ongoing. This may indicate that the lower
esophageal sphincter is in a state of disrepair and letting
excess gas or acid through. If these episodes are frequent, it
is advised to see your physician as soon as possible and let
him or her know you have an acid or bile reflux disease
symptom.

What Is An Appropriate GERD Diet?

Before discussing an appropriate GERD diet, it is best to
understand what GERD is. Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
(GERD) (also referred to as heart burn and acid reflux disease)
is caused when the stomach’s acid escapes the stomach through a
protective barrier (called the lower esophageal sphincter) and
into the esophagus, throat and even mouth of the sufferer.

This acid which is meant to stay in the stomach can cause
great discomfort and pain as it travels up through the
sufferer.

Foods to avoid on an GERD diet:

Now that we understand what GERD is, it is easier to
understand which foods and activities to avoid. If one wishes
to avoid GERD, he should avoid anything acidic in nature such
as fruit juices, coffee and spicy foods. Also, anything that is
hard to digest such as alcohol and even cigarette smoke can
irritate the stomach and cause excess gas and in turn can cause
acid reflux disease. Foods that are too rich such as butter
will also impede the digestion process.

So what CAN I eat on an a GERD diet?

With GERD, it is best to stick with foods that are not too
spicy or too rich. Basically, if you stick to a reasonably
healthy diet you will be alright. Make your meals small so as
not to upset your stomach. Mix protein, fat and carbohydrates
at each meal. Too much of any of these 3 macro-nutrients seems
to upset the stomach as well.

Many people find that some dairy products are especially
important in a gastro esophageal reflux disease diet. For
instance, acid reflux is often brought on by sleep apnea. So
then, if you know you are going to get acid reflux when you go
to sleep, you can take a glass of milk or a yogurt before bed.
Milk and yogurt seem to coat the throat and esophagus providing
some relief against the acid. You can try milk or yogurt after
you feel the symptoms come on as well.

Other people find relief from GERD by drinking water either
before it comes on or after. Water seems to dilute the stomach
acid so it is not quite so potent and hence is not as
painful.

Most of all, the foods you can and cannot eat on a GERD diet
are very individual. Some foods will irritate your stomach more
than others. The key is to pay attention and then adjust your
habits accordingly.

Medical Software – Try Before You Buy!

It is always a good idea to test drive before you buy,
whether it is a car or a computer or a piece of software.
Medical software runs the range from expensive and complicated
to simple and user-friendly and just about any combination in
between.

Medical software is focused software that is created for the
special needs of the medical profession. What this means is
that it is created with the profession in mind and with special
attention to the needs of members of the medical world. Just
like every profession has its own special language, medical
software has its own kind of special language too. The
interface might not be the type that you are used to if you
typically use off the shelf software.

However, because the kind of software you are buying when
you purchase medical software is specialized, it can be
expensive. There is another factor to be considered and that is
because not a lot of people use it, you cannot get the typical
kind of feedback that you might. For instance, if you want to
know about a common product such as Microsoft Word, chances are
that 90 percent of the people you know have used it.

Suppose there is a piece of medical software that is
advertised as being the latest and greatest software for
managing your medical practice. Who do you ask what the product
is like? Maybe another practitioner uses it but how will you
meet this person? Maybe there is an online forum where such
products are discussed but it is doubtful that much attention
would be paid to a question about a particular software
program.

The lack of response would not really have anything to do
with the program. It would be more likely due to the rare
nature of the program measured up against an off the shelf
program that has millions of users.

The point of all this is that the best solution to this
problem is a medical software demo. Before you lay out the
money to buy medical software, try a demo version. It will give
you a feel for the interface and the features and will let you
know if the program has what you want.

Ideally you should try to find several medical software
programs that sound like they meet your needs. Download demos
for each of them and give them a full run through.

Once you see the medical software in action, you will be
able to determine the balance between cost of the medical
software and the features that the software offers.

What Is Infant Acid Reflux And What To Do About It?

What is acid reflux? Acid reflux is more commonly known as
heartburn. Most of us have experienced it at one time or
another and we usually associate with that pizza we ate at 2
o’clock in the morning. So what is infant acid reflux then?

First, let’s understand what acid reflux is.

The human body (including infants) has something called a
lower esophageal sphincter. This sphincter is designed to let
food through to the stomach while at the same time keep the
stomach acid in the stomach. Form time to time this sphincter
malfunctions. Sometimes we just eat poorly or too much and that
causes excess gas and acid build up that the sphincter cannot
keep down. Sometimes we may just be born with a weak sphincter
that acts up when we lay down or bend over. Sometimes our
heartburn is indicative of something more serious such as sleep
apnea.

It is important to understand that some acid reflux is
frequent and ongoing (chronic) and some is occasional (acute).
If you have an underlying condition that causes the reflux to
be chronic or your lower esophageal sphincter is damaged, you
may have GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease). If you
suspect this, speak to your physician immediately.

What does this have to do with infant acid reflux? Well, now
you know how it is caused and the difference between regular
acid reflux and GERD. It is not likely that your infant has
GERD but if you suspect it in the least, please see you
physician or pediatrician right away.

Most likely your infant did not get acid reflux from pizza,
so, where did they get it? For one thing, babies spend far more
time on their back than adults. When they are on their backs,
gravity is not helping to keep the stomach acids down.

Also, most babies primarily eat liquids. Solids are heavier
and help keep the stomach acid where it belongs.

Now you know why your baby has infant acid reflux. What can
you do to help?

You can try adding cereal to the baby’s bottle which may
absorb some of the stomach acid.

After feeding the baby, make sure that you keep it upright
for at least half of an hour so that the digestion process is
well under way. Make sure to burp your baby properly as
normal.

Try to have the baby sleep in an upright position as much as
possible (check with your doctor on this). This will help keep
the stomach acid down.

In extreme circumstances, your physician may suggest some
over the counter medications or even prescription medications.
Please do your research on these and make the best informed
decision for you and your child.
