Medication To Treat RLS

Now that you understand the place medication has in your
overall strategy, let’s look at the different type of
medications available and their pros and cons when used to
treat RLS.

Dopamine Agonists

The most commonly prescribed medications within this group
are Requip and Mirapex. Mirapex is the drug that I personally
use to treat my RLS and it has worked wonders for me. Doctor’s
do not know exactly how Mirapex works for RLS but it does for
many people. Speak to your doctor to see if Mirapex is right
for you.

There are some precautions however when using Mirapex in
particular and Dopamine Agonists in general. Sometimes they
actually cause the symptoms to worsen and start earlier in the
day for some. Obviously this is not ideal and luckily I did not
have this problem. The second issue with these drugs is the
possibility of ‘rebound’. Rebound is when you miss taking the
medication for whatever reason (perhaps you forget to take it
on vacation or run out etc.) and the symptoms come back with a
vengance. I have experienced this effect first hand and it is
absolutely horrible. I am preparing to wean myself off of
Mirapex and will be working closely with my doctor to do
so.

Requip and Mirapex are the first 2 medications in the U.S.
to be approved by the FDA to treat Restless Legs Syndrome.

Benzodiazepines

A couple of examples of this group are Clonazopam and
Valium. These do not actually treat the limb movements but just
assist you in not waking when the limb movements occur. This
can work great for some as even though your RLS is still
occurring, you do not wake up and are able to get the deep
restorative sleep needed.

I actually tried Clonazopam and as it does for some it
greatly exacerbated my symptoms. It was not pretty. Aside from
this, Benzodiazepines can be highly addictive. Personally, I
would explore other options before taking a highly addictive
drug. Another thing to note is that often RLS affects your bed
partner as well. This is not to be taken lightly as it can
absolutely affect your bed partners sleep. Because
Benzodiazepines do not treat the symptoms, you will still have
leg movements and will still be disturbing your bed partner’s
sleep.

There are many other types of medications that your doctor
may recommend such as morphine, codeine and methadone.

If you are considering using medication to treat your RLS I
would speak to your doctor about which is right for you and as
this sleep disorder is so misunderstood, not a lot of
physician’s really understand it either. So, I would begin by
mentioning both Requip and Mirapex to him/her as they have
anecdotally had the greatest effectiveness in treating RLS.

Medical Report Software Features And Functions

Medical report software might seem like nothing other than
an excellent way to keep track of patient appointment needs,
treatment, and outcomes. However, there is another use for
medical report software and that is as a basis for
research.

There are special research programs that fall into the
category of data management and analysis software. Typically
these programs use medical report extractor software that runs
through the database containing medical reports that have been
collected and stored using a software program.

The medical report software will have stored the information
in a structure that meets the standards of the day so that the
data has a form and shape that can be sorted and extracted
according to the specific needs of the study.

The extractor software then pulls out the information that
is pertinent to the research and organizes it into a structured
format. For instance, the extractor software might pull out
information on women over 60 with cataracts.

No identifying data is extracted. All that is pulled out of
the database is the raw data which is disconnected from the
personal information about the patient with the cataracts.

The next step is to run data analysis software on the
extracted data. The final step is to run data management
software which can then look at the relationship between the
data and the information on the patient that is non-identifying
to the patient. Information such as age, gender, and ethnicity
can all provide useful data and yet allow the patient to have
complete privacy.

Privacy is the most important consideration in storing
electronic medical records. There have been efforts especially
since the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) came into effect to remove identifiers from electronic
medical records. In the process of removing identifiers,
several medical report software components have to be
considered.

Medical record software typically records identifiers
associated with the patient. This can be the patient’s name,
medical record number, and pathology accession number. However,
in protecting privacy, even more diligence is needed. There are
other ways to identify a patient through data such as dates,
accession numbers, home or work addresses, institution names,
and physician names.

Medical report software is a great tool for the medical
practitioner to use in keeping track of patients and their
treatment. It is also a great tool for research that will
eventually lead to improved patient care. There is a fine line
between tracking the patient and protecting the patient’s
privacy. Luckily there is software that can handle both.

Medical Records And Technology

There is no doubt about it, medical matters. It is so
important because it deals with life. One mistake and it could
mean the end of the life of a person, or doing it the right way
at the right time means a chance to have a second life, a life
where one is fully functional.

Aside from medical breakthroughs, medical technologies and
medical procedures, keeping the medical records straight and up
to date is important. This is where technology is more
important even more. But sadly, technology and record keeping
are not at par yet with each other. There is still a big gap
when it comes to making improvements in medical record
keeping.

Patients and doctors dream of a day when they can be
anywhere in the world and their medical records can be accessed
with just one click of the mouse. Doctors can be in a vacation
in Jamaica and can still give great medical advice to a patient
who needs it at that time. It can go even further: they will be
able to prescribe the right medicine to the pharmacy back at
home and it will be delivered straight to the patient! People
can go anywhere they want to in the world and not be worried
about their health because they know their doctors will always
give them professional advice wherever they may be. This is
medical practice at its best.

What Is GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease)?

First, what is GERD? GERD is caused from stomach acids
escaping the stomach up through the lower esophageal sphincter
and into the esophagus and throat. Sometimes this happens from
food trapped in the sphincter or permanent damage to the
sphincter from disorders such as sleep apnea.

GERD is also referred to as heartburn and acid reflux.

So how do you know if you have GERD? There are four main
symptoms.

The first stage is simply excess burping. As you digest your
food, gases start to build up. If any of the gases escape
through your lower esophageal sphincter they can result in
excess burping which can seem innocuous enough but can lead to
the more common stage 2.

The second stage of acid reflux symptoms is what you hear
about more commonly. It is a severe burning sensation in the
chest (specifically the breast bone region). It is due to the
stomach acids escaping the stomach, passing the lower
esophageal sphincter and moving up to the chest region. Because
this liquid is very acidic, it can create some very severe
pain. Many people even mistakenly believe they are having a
heart attack when they are struck with GERD.

The third stage is a sore throat. Most people assume that
all there is to acid reflux is stage 2. In actual fact, the
stomach acid can pass up into the throat doing damage
(sometimes permanent) to the throat. The affected person may
believe that the sore throat is actually caused from something
else, further clouding the issue.

The last stage of GERD symptoms is a sour taste or even a
severely sore mouth. Similar to stage 3, the acid actually
makes its way all the way up to the person’s mouth again
causing damage which can become permanent.

None of these acid reflux symptoms should be take lightly as
they can be lead to severe pain and even cancer (which of
course can lead to death). Sometimes acid reflux is also
indicative of a more serious and immediate problem such as
sleep apnea.

People who have sleep apnea stop breathing several times per
night due to an obstruction in the throat area. Although they
are not breathing, the diaphragm is moving and it draws the
stomach content up from the stomach through the lower
esophageal sphincter causing the various GERD symptoms.
Typically these sufferers are affected mostly in the
mornings.

As you can see, none of these four GERD symptoms should be
ignored. Now that you know what is GERD and if you suspect you
may have it, please consult your physician.

Important Information on Medical Matters

Everything about medicine matters because medicine is used
to heal the body’s ailments.

Sometimes it extends to healing the psyche and the soul. It
is also used to prevent sickness. It is not just the medicines
and the medical procedures but also the people who are in
medicine, the medical practitioners, health care organizations
and even the janitor that cleans the hospital walls and floors.
Everything and everybody who has a role in the medical field
everyday are important. It does not end there, because advice
and information on medical matters is important as well. But
one thing is for sure – a person who needs medical advice needs
to get it from a licensed doctor and not from everybody else.
It is dangerous and can even be life threatening if a person
gets it elsewhere.

Just like an “average Joe”, a medical practitioner also
needs to get his information on medical matters from a
reputable source. Medicine is a learning process. There is
always new information that is coming out. Things that can heal
and help people recover from a certain illness. Technology also
has a significant contribution to medicine because without it
there would not be any significant improvement to medicine. You
see, the field of medicine is not allowed to be stationary. It
should be continually moving and continuously improving because
medical matters are important.

Medical Practice Management Software – Billing Scheduling

In the 21st century, a medical practice needs to be
completely on top of their office management. The old days of
having color-coded file folders stacked neatly on shelves are
long gone. At least they are if you want to have a vibrant and
profitable medical practice.

Oh and don’t forget that word ‘profitable’.  For this
you need to have a streamlined system for billing. Medical
scheduling software can offer you all kinds of components
including a billing module.

It might be tempting to look at getting medical billing
software as one package and medical scheduling software as
another package. There are some things you should consider
before you do this. One is whether the same person handles the
scheduling and the billing or if you have a team handling these
matters or if either is outsourced.

The demands of a medical practice can vary almost to the
point where each practice has different needs. Medical
scheduling software can easily organize your client information
and if you have a single office, you may only need a scheduling
software program that can handle basic storage and retrieval of
patient files.

What if you have several practitioners sharing the same
office or if you have several offices spread over several
locations? You might need a more detailed kind of medical
scheduling software that can track and synchronize your clients
and untangle the various kinds of cross-coverage and referrals
that happen within a multi-practitioner office or a
multi-location office.

Regardless of whether you need a single physician or a
multiple-physician, multi-location medical scheduling software
program, there are some elements that you will have to include
in your software. One is the quick search component. If someone
wants to book an appointment, you need to be able to have the
information at your fingertips. The same holds true for medical
billing software. Getting your money in should not involve a
long involved process. The speed of having patient information
updated in the medical billing software helps keep the cash
flow running smoothly.

Another essential component is simplicity. Because of the
numerous different kinds of medical billing and scheduling
software programs, it is essential that they be user-friendly.
The more steps involved, the more likely it is that mistakes
will be made.

All it takes is one mistake in entering in patient
information and you have a mess that could be critical. Think
of what could happen if crucial patient information is stored
in one record while another record is created that does not
have the urgent information. This type of dreadful mistake can
be prevented with a program that double checks for such
errors.

There Is More To Keeping Medical Appointments Than Meets The Eye…

Perhaps you think that medical appointment scheduling
software is nothing more than a computer program that acts like
a big fancy calendar where your staff can enter in the name of
a patient that will link to all the saved details on that
patient’s previous visits to your medical practice.

There is more to keeping medical appointments than meets the
eye. There have been studies done on databases created by
medical appointment scheduling software. In other words, it is
one thing to have a person call up and make an appointment and
have that person actually show up and keep the appointment.

When appointments are made and the client does not show up
there is a lot of negative backlash. If a person makes a
medical appointment and fails to keep it, the medical practice
loses money, can suffer from scheduling conflicts if the person
shows up late for instance, and the patient suffers interrupted
continuity of care if he or she does not show up at all.

Studies have shown that failed appointments have ranged up
to 42 percent. What kind of impact would this have on your
practice if 42 percent of the appointments so carefully entered
in your medical appointment scheduling software were not
kept?

The surprising aspect of this is that your medical
appointment scheduling software can actually help you with this
problem. It is not your medical appointment scheduling software
that causes it but it can help solve some of the no-show
problems. Some of the reasons people do not keep their medical
appointments are related to socio-economic or demographic
factors. Other reasons are that their symptoms go away or get
so bad that they could not wait to keep the appointment or that
they simply forgot the appointment or something more pressing
came up at the last minute.

One simple step that can help alleviate the problem of
unkept medical appointments is reminders. You can have your
medical appointment software set up a tickler system that will
email the person or remind staff to call the person to make
sure they plan to show up for the appointment. The software can
record the best way to contact the patient and that method can
be used. Even better, it can track the patients most likely to
miss their appointments and you only have to remind them. This
saves a lot of office labor.

As a side note, it might be a surprise to learn that clients
who give you their cell phone numbers are less likely to miss
appointments. But the fact is that people who are willing to
give out their cell number are more apt to be motivated to come
to the appointment because they are more open to communication
between your office and themselves.

Dialysis Software As A Key Component In Managing Dialysis

There is software available for just about every imaginable
purpose. Even if you focus on medical software, there is
something for everyone whether you are a practitioner or simply
a person interested in monitoring and maintaining your own
health.

A prime example is dialysis software. The benefits of
dialysis software are many and varied. From the clinical
perspective, dialysis software has a great deal to offer. It
can save labor, frees the staff to carry out other jobs, cuts
back on potential mistakes, provides financial and clinical
data, gives the clinician the ability to monitor treatment,
allows medical records to be available in different locations,
and collects data that can be used in technical papers.

The more data that is available, the more able the medical
community is to move forward in research and technological
advances. This is not the most important aspect though.
Dialysis software can be an incredible benefit to the person
who is receiving dialysis. Actually even the software that
schedules dialysis can be a benefit.

Dialysis software that schedules the time and duration of
dialysis allows for the start times to be staggered so that the
technicians are able to fully focus on each individual without
feeling that they are keeping someone waiting unnecessarily.
Also, this allows for each slot to be personalized and
customized for the specified patient.

Thirty-five years ago, dialysis was only available to about
20 percent of the people who desperately needed in order to
live. This was due to the simple lack of dialysis equipment and
available spaces for those suffering from renal failure.
Currently there are 100,000 new dialysis patients annually. If
these figures were the same in the early 1970s, that means that
each year 80,000 people would have died from kidney
failure.

Not only has dialysis become an almost routine type of
treatment, the whole field of kidney failure therapy has
blossomed. With large corporations paying attention to the
field of dialysis there are the resources that can create and
disperse educational material, develop quality control
programs, and set up the appropriate fields of research
studies.

There is even dialysis software for the individual patient
so that he or she can keep track of doctor’s appointments, the
names of specialists, the names of nurses, the types and times
of medications prescribed along with information on what each
medication does. Other things that personal dialysis software
can track include lab results and the side effects of
medication.

In other words, dialysis software has grown to meet the
demands of the disease and both responds to the needs of the
renal disease practitioners and patients but the software also
benefits from the data that it can collect and analyze.

Improve Medical Practice Efficiency With Patient Tracking Software

Patient tracking software is a great idea. The best thing
that patient tracking software does is allow you to track how
long procedures can take in a medical institution.

An example that comes immediately to mind is the admission
process or emergency room process. Patient tracking software
can provide useful information on how long it took the patient
to go from entry to exit. It can be used to provide information
on almost all service delivery aspects of an institution.

The information that can be gathered from the tracking
software can be of a great benefit to the institution. It
provides a clear picture of the time-flow involved in various
aspects of the institutions daily business.

The outcomes can have an impact on staffing as the patient
tracking software can show where the bottlenecks are. This
could call for a reallocation of staff or the addition of
staff. Not only does this add to the institutions efficiency
but it also adds to the overall patient satisfaction.

One version of patient tracker software provider is set up
so that when the patient arrives, he or she simply signs their
names on a digital tablet and clicks on the name of the
physician and the type of visit that they are there for.

The information is electronically fed into the system and at
the same time the receptionist, nurse and physician have the
necessary information for their part of the overall patient
visit. This allows the medical practice to combine workflow and
applications.

This lessens the load on the staff and doctors and this
means that the practice is able to treat more patients with
greater efficiency. Not only does this make for a smoother and
easier workplace but the benefits are noticed by patients.
Patients who have a positive experience are more apt to return
for further care. They are also more apt to spread the word and
this means that the practice is more apt to have increased
patient referrals.

Patient tracking software can be purchased as part of a
system that handles billing and scheduling. It can be also be
used as a standalone piece of software. If you purchase patient
tracking software as a separate program check first to see how
well it integrates with your existing software. While this is
not a necessity, it could add to overall efficiency if you what
to add tracking information to the standard management
software.
