There was a time when parents often worry about their kids
especially when their kids are sick.

What is really disappointing is that even if your kid is
sick right now, you have to wait for your kid’s regular
doctor’s clinic days and hours. Doctors should be available all
the time isn’t it. We normally do not go to another doctor
because the regular doctor knows the medical history of the
patient. The regular doctor knows the medicines that have
already been given for that particular illness. So it is indeed
a sore point for some of the parents to have to wait until the
regular doctor is available again.

But this is not the case anymore because medical
practitioners have realized that medical matters, especially
medical records of the patients. So, for the more advanced
clinics, medical records of their patients are inputted inside
a database and this database can be accessed by the doctor on
duty at that time. It would not be hard for the in house doctor
to check the records of the patient electronically. Although
there are more technologically advanced doctors that can access
your medical records via the world wide web on their PDA or
mobile phone, even during a vacation!

Hopefully, all the doctors around the world will follow
suit. One does not have to worry about the medical records
leaking out because these databases have appropriate stringent
security protesting sensitive information. The clinic, and the
hospital, makes sure of that.

Restless Legs Syndrome is also known as Wittmaack-Ekbom’s

In most reported cases, RLS gets worse as you age.

There is no known cure for RLS, only various methods to cope
with it.

There is also no known cause for RLS although there are a
few common theories available. Many doctors believe that it is
a neurological disorder (from Wikipedia: Neurological disorders
are disorders that affect the central nervous system (brain and
spinal cord), the peripheral nervous system (peripheral nerves)
or the autonomic nervous system).

Still other doctors and researchers believe that RLS is due
to an iron deficiency or inadequate vitamin and mineral intake
or folate (green leafy vegetable) intake. From personal
experience, I know that my iron levels are fine but my vitamin
and mineral intake can use some improvement.

These however are only theories as there is no accepted
cause of Restless Legs Syndrome.

Diagnosing RLS is very anecdotal but also quite simple. You
may never have heard of it but chances are that if you have it
you are intimately familiar with the symptoms. People who have
RLS (including me) describe it as an uncontrollable urge to
move their legs. This urge comes typically at rest and worsens
in the evening and right before bed. It is next to impossible
to resist this urge to move the legs. Once the sufferer gets up
and walks around, the uncomfortable feelings instantly
disappear.

So the solution seems simple, get up and move around. That
is easy enough. The trouble comes because the symptoms of RLS
typically do not abate until the early hours of the morning.
Essentially, for this to be effective you would have to walk
around all night until the symptoms go away. This might even be
a good strategy for those whose RLS is not serious but it is
obviously a poor strategy for those affected night after
night.

This is the reason that RLS can be such a serious condition.
RLS and the associated limb movements (Periodic Limb Movements
or PLM’s) can prevent the suffer from entering the deeper more
restorative stages of sleep. Compounded night after night that
sleep deficit can take it’s toll on the sufferer in the form of
anxiety, weight gain, depression and chronic fatigue. In other
words, RLS can spill over and negatively affect every aspect of
your life.

It is important to note that not all people who have RLS
also have PLM’s and vice versa. However, these are the
exceptions rather than the rule. The majority of RLS sufferers
also have PLM’s during sleep.

A typical RLS sufferer may go years not realizing that he
has a sleep disorder. He might feel tired everyday but
society’s response is typically to suck it up. The associated
fatigue may lead to depression, over eating and weight gain.
The weight gain may then lead to sleep apnea which could lead
to heart attack, stroke or diabetes. Not to say that every RLS
victim will follow this path but it is just an example to show
how something the sufferer isn’t even aware of can
snowball.

In the United States, 95 percent of medical bills are paid
by the government or through medical insurance. Just think of
all the forms that need to be filled out to process this many
claims.

Luckily, there are many options when it comes to medical
insurance software. A typical piece of such insurance software
will carry out many tasks. Some of the primary medical
insurance software tasks are printing invoices for private
insurance company billing, facilitating billing from the
appointment right on through to the healthcare provided,
providing electronic claims, listing line items, and creating
automatic postings.

At a very minimum, medical insurance software must be able
to track billings, accounts receivable and payments. If the
need of the practice is enough, you should look into having
insurance software that allows for claims to be sent direct to
Medicare or to a clearinghouse.

Insurance is complex at any level regardless of whether is
it being looked at from the perspective of sales personnel,
medical practitioners and institutions, or the end user. There
is also another way of looking at medical insurance software
and that is from the perspective of the person taking out
individual or family medical insurance. If a person can access
medical insurance software, that person is then able to look at
the comparative points that health insurance programs
offer.

For the broker selling medical insurance, software allows
them to provide support for underwriting, processing new
business, understanding and explaining insurance policy
services, bill the insurance company, handle insurance agent
payments commissions. Then there is the whole range of
insurance claims processing, management and reporting that the
software needs to be able to handle.

There is also the issue of group medical insurance software.
This brings in group insurers, third party administrators,
multi-employer trusts, and self-administered plans. Software
that deals with group health insurance software has further
demands placed on it such as support for enrollment in the
plan, billing, accounting, collections, provider networks,
managed care, customer service, accounting, management
reporting.

Medical insurance software may be complex but imagine a
world without it. Claims would take so much longer to process
and would be so much more apt to contain errors. The ability to
have a group medical insurance policy monitored by software
that speaks the same electronic language as the health
management software means that the industry is able to smoothly
translate all the needs, expectations, and regulations that the
medical industry has.

Man has gone a long way when it comes to medicine. There was
a time when leeches were used to draw blood out of a person.
And these leeches suck on you for several hours. Talk about
physically draining you!

Now all that is needed is a syringe and the procedure
happens in less than 30 seconds. Isn’t that one of the things
we should be grateful for the advancement of medicine? It is
safe to assume that if we are still at the age when leeches
still sucked the blood nobody will go to the doctor.

Medicine has risen to so many levels and it is still
climbing higher and higher as so many breakthroughs occur on a
daily basis. This can be attributable to the fact that men and
women who work on medicine have the use of modern technology at
their disposal. It is important to give technological support
to those who strive to improve medicine day by day because
medical matters. Pretty soon , the cure for AIDS and cancer
will be discovered. Just as the vaccine for polio were invented
several hundred years ago. At that time polio was the number 1
killer disease among children and adults. But not anymore
especially for those parents who had their children vaccinated.
Let us not lose hope because there will come a time when its
time for us to say goodbye to diseases such as AIDS and
cancer!

First, it is helpful to understand what heartburn is and
what it isn’t. First what it isn’t. When you have heartburn,
your heart is not really burning. It just feels that way. It
also has nothing to do with having a heart attack.

If you are unclear at all if you are experiencing heartburn
or a genuine heart attack you should dial 911 immediately. It
does not pay to take a chance with your health.

So, what is heartburn? Heartburn is a rather common illness
that affects people of all ages and all walks of life. You have
probably experienced heartburn it at some point in your life
and maybe you did not know what it was called. When you eat,
your food passes through your mouth, down your throat, through
your esophagus and into your stomach. There is a sphincter
(called the lower esophageal sphincter) that is supposed to let
the food pass through and keep the liquid (stomach acids) from
coming back up. If you eat particularly poorly or if the
sphincter is damaged, the stomach acid can return up to your
esophagus and throat. This is when heartburn occurs.

So, here are the symptoms of heartburn:

1. In the beginning and if the heartburn is mild, you will
only experience excess gas (burping) and mild discomfort in the
stomach.

2. The second stage is where heartburn get’s its name. Once
the stomach acid travels back through the sphincter it will
create a burning sensation in the breast bone area (chest).

3. In the third stage, the stomach acid travels all the way
up to the throat burning the throat.

4. Lastly, the acid can reach the mouth making the mouth
have a burning sensation as well.

These symptoms of heartburn may not seem very drastic and
many pass them off as trivial. Left untreated there is a
possibility the heartburn can lead to more serious problems
such as esophageal cancer.

There are other considerations as well. Heartburn often is
indicative of other medical problems such as sleep apnea. Sleep
apnea is a silent killer. If you consistently experience
heartburn through out the night or first thing in the morning
you should consult with your physician to explore any possible
underlying conditions such as sleep apnea.

In a world where the population is aging and where people
live longer, there is more interest in and need for
state-of-the-art medical care. The frightening fact is that in
spite of the need for advance medical care and in spite of the
massive steps forward in the world of information technology,
the two elements of medical care and information technology
have not grown together.

In a field that could benefit so much from software and
software innovations, medical care seems to be still living in
a world where paper records and handwritten scrawls dominate.
Even in the United States which is often in the technical
vanguard, doctors do not tend to use electronic medical records
or prescribe medications electronically.

Of all the places that can benefit from software, medical
care is very near the top of the list. Software makes it easier
to coordinate care, detect errors, and stick to appropriate
clinical guidelines.

It makes it a lot easier for a patient’s personal records to
be monitored and tracked through the system if there is a
central type of system that allows an individual medical care
facility or even a single practicing physician to plug into a
larger system where doctors and medical staff fill in
information that is stored in a database.

About the biggest concern is patient privacy and
confidentiality. The system can allow for an identifying number
to be entered into the main medical database and only linked to
the actual patient name through human intervention. For
instance, if Joe Smith goes to the doctor, the doctor can enter
all Joe’s symptoms into a database that is stored locally but
also uploaded on a regular basis to a main national database.
On the local computer, Joe’s name can be attached to the
database but not uploaded to the main database.

If Joe moves across the continent, he can ask to have his
records transferred. One of the major benefits of medical care
software is that the entire body of information collected on
Joe can be transmitted through a simple encrypted technique
that can be sent electronically and that allows the new medical
care facility to have the link go from one doctor to another.
The new doctor uses the encrypted patient name and link to plug
into the national database and pulls down all the information
on that patient.

This is just one way that medical care software could
benefit both the medical care system and the patient.

Medical welfare is important because it does not only deal
with medicine but it also deals with all the issues of
society.

It exists to pay special attention to any medical and
health-related issue that has an impact to the general welfare
of the community. It is usually being handled by a team of
doctors and medical professionals and even people who are not
necessarily doctors but has experience in the medical field for
a number of years.

Government should place special emphases on medical welfare.
It should aim to work with the community to improve the already
existing medical welfare programs or make new ones. There
should already be existing welfare programs for children, young
adults, teens, women, men and most especially our senior
citizens. It should not only support healthy living but it
should aim to enable each and every one of us to live as one
should live despite the economic conditions.

Every human being has every right to live with as much
dignity as possible. Remember, the first sign of society
breakdown is when people no longer act as human beings. The
rising increase of man made calamities has clearly affected the
progress and the development of any country as a whole. Thus,
when society breaks down, the country breaks down too. And
death and destruction will be felt by all the people across the
nations. That is why it is also important for each and every
one of us to support the medical welfare programs being
implemented by the local and national government.

Before diving into the best treatment for acid reflux in
infants, let’s explore what acid reflux and acid reflux disease
are.

Acid reflux disease is also known as GERD (gastro-esophageal
reflux disease) and more commonly referred to as
heartburn. In a normal human body, there is a sphincter
called the lower esophageal sphincter which allows food to pass
through to the stomach and stops the stomachs digestive acids
from coming back up through the esophagus. For various reasons
that sphincter can become impaired, allowing the stomach acid
back up through the esophagus and causing severe pain.

Left untreated, this pain can lead to more serious issues
such as cancer although this is very rare in infants. Infants,
more often than adults are supine (lying on their back). In
this position, the infant does not have gravity on its side to
keep the acid down. On top of this, infants consume mostly
liquids so there is little or no solid to help keep the acid
where it should be.

It is important to note that simple acid reflux or heart
burn is different than acid reflux disease or gastro-esophageal
reflux disease. The latter are named for similar but chronic
conditions which can cause long term damage. Typically infants
have acute acid reflux (heartburn) and all though it pains us
to see them this way it is very common and usually goes away
quite quickly.

Typically acid reflux in infants is not a chronic condition
and should be treated on an as needed basis. If you suspect
your child’s acid reflux is due to a more serious condition,
please contact your physician or pediatrician.

There is no one best treatment for acid reflux in infants
but let’s explore some options.

* First, it is important to keep the child in an upright
position for at least a half of an hour after feeding.

* Also, if you are able to have them sleep in an upright
position (perhaps in a car seat) that can help as well.

* Make sure to ‘burp’ your baby as you always do to
alleviate any gas build up.

* If appropriate for the child, thicken the milk in the
bottle with cereal to give something solid in the stomach to
help absorb the liquid (stomach acids).

* Lastly, under the guidance of a physician only, there are
over the counter medications and prescription medications that
may be right for your child.

These suggestions should provide some relief for acid reflux
in infants. Of course it can be a frustrating time for parents
as the child is not able to properly convey what the problem
is. Should these suggestions not provide any relief to the
infant, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.

When you buy typical software, you usually have a narrow
range of software companies to choose from. Office software
tends to come in a limited range of choices.

Perhaps there are only one or two primary providers of the
kind of software you need. This makes it relatively easy to
make the choices you need to make. Sometimes, if you have
questions or concerns, all you have to do is check online
forums for ratings on an individual product. You can also just
ask questions about the feature.

Over the years software companies have come and gone. A
prime example is WordPerfect Corporation. Once the dominant
word processing software company, WordPerfect slipped into
oblivion while the software itself went through several other
owners and is still a major contender in the field of office
suites.

However, when it comes to healthcare software companies, the
field is very broad. For once thing, there is a wide variety of
healthcare software programs available but the demand is much
narrower than it would be for an office suite or a video
game.

In the Software 500 list for 2003, the healthcare software
and services segment showed growth. At that time the largest
healthcare software company was Cerner and it showed a growth
of 40 percent over the previous year. For Cerner, that meant
that they did $617 million in software and services revenue
that year.

In the most recent listing (2006) for the Software 500 list,
there were 12 healthcare software companies (including Cerner).
In 2003, there were only 8 in the top 500 software
companies.

These are the big companies. Typically they provide software
management programs that allow medical practitioners to kept
records, make claims, track patients, and analyze patterns.

There are also targeted healthcare software companies that
focus on specialty practices and health issues such as
diabetes, renal failure, liver disease, various forms of
cancer, and bowel disease.

What makes healthcare software companies different is that
there are many combinations of healthcare issues and concerns
throughout the world. They have to be aware of the needs of the
bigger healthcare institutions as well as having to be aware of
the different healthcare systems around the world.

Healthcare software that focuses on a specific health issue
can focus just on diabetes, for example, but a healthcare
software company that focuses on the provider has to be aware
of the laws of the country and changes in legal requirements
such as the privacy issues relating to individual
healthcare.
